چکیده

GPS radio occultation events observed between 24 July and 17 November 2008 by the IGOR occultation receiver aboard the TerraSAR-X satellite are processed and analyzed. The comparison of 15 327 refractivity profiles with collocated ECMWF data yield a mean bias between zero and −0.30 % at altitudes between 5 and 30 km. Standard deviations decrease from about 1.4 % at 5 km to about 0.6 % at 10 km altitude, however, increase significantly in the upper stratosphere. At low latitudes mean biases and standard deviations are larger, in particular in the lower troposphere. The results are consistent with 15 159 refractivity observations collected during the same time period by the BlackJack receiver aboard GRACE-A and processed by GFZ’s operational processing system. The main difference between the two occultation instruments is the implementation of openloop signal tracking in the IGOR (TerraSAR-X) receiver which improves the tropospheric penetration depth in terms of ray height by about 2 km compared to the conventional closed-loop data acquired by BlackJack (GRACE-A).

GPS radio occultation with CHAMP and GRACE: A first look at a new and promising satellite configuration for global atmospheric sounding

CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) formed a satellite configuration for precise atmospheric sounding during the first activation of the GPS (Global Positioning System) radio occultation experiment aboard GRACE on 28 and 29 July 2004. 338 occultations were recorded aboard both satellites, providing globally distributed vertical profiles ...

Atmosphere sounding using GPS radio occultation

Introduction On July 17, 1995 the U.S. Air Force announced “ .. that today the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite constellation has met all requirements for Full Operational Capability”. Apart from precise positioning GPS signals also can be used to derive characteristic properties of the propagation medium (neutral atmosphere and ionosphere). Onboard the Low-Earth-Orbiting MICROLAB-1 sa...

Monitoring Alpine glacier activity by a combined use of TerraSAR-X images and continuous GPS measurements – the Argentière glacier experiment

The monitoring of Alpine glacier activity is one of the applications which require the combined use of ground measurements and SAR data. It should become feasible thanks to the new generation SAR satellites (ALOS, TerraSAR-X, Cosmo-SkyMed and RadarSAT-2) and the high precision GPS measurements. This paper presents the early results of an experiment which started in 2007 on Argentière glacier (M...

GPS radio occultation with CHAMP : Initial results

Fig. 1. The German CHAMP satellite (view from antivelocity direction with GPS occultation antennas) Abstract: The German CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite (launched on July 15, 2000) is a geoscience mission aiming for the determination of Earth’s gravity and magnetic field and for GPS-based atmospheric sounding. The atmospheric profiling experiment onboard CHAMP was started in...

LAGRANGE RO: A GNSS Receiver for Radio Occultation

A GPS Radio Occultation occurs when a transmitting GPS satellite, setting or rising behind the Earth limb, is viewed by a LEO satellite that carries on board a space-qualified GPS receiver. In this way, it is provided a vertical sounding of the atmosphere exploiting the relative motion between the GPS and the LEO satellites. The technique proved to be particularly precise in retrieving temperat...
